Application 02 — Thermal Flexibility

Thermal flexibility without sacrificing comfort.

Electrification turns thermal demand into a potential source of energy-system flexibility. But a building is not a simple controllable load. Available flexibility depends on thermal conditions, system state, building characteristics and the comfort constraints of individual spaces.

The Proposition

Determining what flexibility is actually available.

HeatShift provides the operational intelligence layer required to determine what flexibility is available, when it can be used, and under what conditions — without compromising the comfort conditions defined for each space.

Positioning
"BMS controls equipment. HeatShift determines the thermal flexibility available from the building and the conditions under which it can be used."
Second Application
Flexibility bounded by comfort.

COMFORT-CONSTRAINED FLEXIBILITY

The HeatShift Loop

From measurement to evidenced response.

01
Stage One
Measure
Continuous measurement of thermal conditions and system state across the building or estate.
02
Stage Two
Determine
The operational intelligence layer determines current thermal state and system behaviour.
03
Stage Three
Quantify available flexibility
The thermal flexibility available from the building is quantified against defined comfort constraints.
04
Stage Four
Apply comfort constraints
Occupant and space-level comfort conditions are applied as hard boundaries on any flexible response.
05
Stage Five
Respond & Evidence
A bounded response is applied where appropriate, and a structured evidence record is generated.

Platform Extensibility

Where the platform can operate.

HeatShift's operational intelligence layer is designed to extend to a wider set of flexible thermal and energy assets. Each area below is at a different stage of active development.

Heat pumps
Thermal flexibility scheduling within defined comfort and operational bounds.
Thermal storage
Coordinating stored thermal capacity as a flexible energy resource.
Commercial HVAC
Applying the same operational intelligence layer to larger and more complex building systems.
Campus energy systems
Coordinating thermal and energy flexibility across multi-building estates.
Distributed thermal assets
Aggregating and coordinating flexibility across distributed thermal systems.
EVs & other flexible assets
Extending the operational intelligence layer beyond thermal systems to other distributed energy resources.

These are not separate technology propositions. They are extensions of the same operational intelligence infrastructure, with development and deployment progressing according to application, market and system requirements.
